Every 4th period class was asked to give the Olweus Anti-Bullying Lesson. Each teacher was given a series of discussion questions to start a conversation with their class, move the conversation to smaller groups, and then each groups could share what they discussed by a oral presentation or by using whiteboards/poster paper.

This year, I decided to hold the conversation on Edmodo. I created small groups, so students could answer questions that only their group would see. Edmodo automatically includes the teacher into each group to monitor the conversation. This lesson scaffolded well with a previous assignment we did on Edmodo that taught students how to Disagree Respectfully with each other online.

Here are the conversations that each group had online:

We Will Not Bully Others. What is Bullying? How Can Teasing Lead to Bullying? What are some things you could say if your being teased?

We will try to help students who are bullied. What are some ways you can help students who are bullied? If you saw bullying, what would you say or do? If you were being bullied, would you want someone to help you?

We will try to include students who are left out. What does this rule mean to you? Why do you think some students don’t include t hose who are alone? What might make including others so difficult? How could you include classmates who are often left out?

If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home. Do you think that most students who are bullied actually tell someone? Who are they most likely to tell? Why do you think students who are bullied often don’t tell anyone? Which adult(s) on the ERHS campus could you talk to if you or another student is being bullies?

I created a chart using a google program called Lucid Chart to use as a virtual white board. This version is free, and you can make & share, like Google Docs, flow charts. The more complicated charts require a fee. I pushed the free version to the limit with this project.

This is the document that students created online. This is one of those flipped classroom moments. If I can manage to have a few more of these moments outside class, we could do some of the fun things that we never have time for.
