My Pre-AP students were assigned to read the Classic Greek Tragedy of Antigone. We had many class discussions about the themes:
- Man’s Law v Gods’ Law
Our readings took place in small groups where students would mark the text and share ideas. We then continued the discussions with the entire class. At the end of our readings, students were tasked to create a remake of the play. Instructions were short and simple: Be creative and make sure you hit the plot points. Students were given the option of simply updating the play into 21st century language or adapting the play to parody another work… such as Mean Girls or Star Wars. Students were given a rubric to help them focus on the task at hand. Students were given 3 class periods to write their scripts and film their scenes. Editing was done at home.
Students used their own phones to record their scenes and used whatever editing software they were comfortable with. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) was absolutely the backbone of this assignment. Here are a few examples of what my students created…
